With only $500 to his name, Victor Jules Bergeron opened a small bar called "Hinky Dinks" in 1934. Shortly thereafter its name was changed to Trader Vic's due to Victor's reputation for trading just about anything for his food or drink. Since its humble beginnings in Oakland, California, Trader Vic's has expanded to include locations as far as Tokyo, Dubai, London, and now Palo Alto, CA among others. A visit to Trader Vic's should be accompanied by one of Victor's trademark drinks. Trader Vic's trademark Mai Tai is a must for anyone who desires an exquisite concoction that pleases the senses. Victor sparked upon a hit drink in 1944 when he first concocted the rum cocktail for friends Ham and Carrie Guild, who were visiting Victor from Tahiti. A drink was born after Carrie took one sip and in Tahitian exclaimed, "Mai Tai-Roa Aé." Indulge yourself in the savory rum drink and after one sip you'll say, "Out of this world - the best." |
